Sent to post at odds of 13-1 in a full field of 10 2-year-olds, Apollitical Brooke sprinted to her first stakes victory in Sunday's 400-yard, $200,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship Stakes (G1) at Zia Park.
Apollitical Brooke covered her quarter-mile trip in :21.866, and her winning margin was a head from 11-1 longshot Believe Me Irene. Irving Delgado-Bustillos rode the brown daughter of Apollitical Jess for owners Samantha Leyba and Lilly Leyba and trainer Ruben Leyba Jr.
Apollitical Brooke was bred in Texas by Randy and Sandy Coleman, but the filly has been campaigned in Oklahoma and New Mexico. She is out of Runaway Brooke, a winning 6-year-old daughter of Brookstone Bay. Her second dam, the winning Runaway Winner mare Runaway Dee Dee, was a finalist in the 1998 Retama Park Derby (G2).
All told, Apollitical Brooke has won four of eight starts, and the $94,080 winner's share of the Southwest Juvenile Championship purse boosted her earnings to $132,361.
Swankee, a 32-1 longshot, finished third to complete a $1 trifecta payoff of $4,137.30. Suenos Dineros, Strykr Force, 3-1 favorite A Passion For Flashn, Bad Neighbor, Desire Astoli, Estrella Damm, and Carris Cartel completed the order of finish.
